Making its first appearance during the 13th century, the Bichon Frise is a descendant of the Water Spaniel. Spanish sailors traded and transported them from one continent to another. These dogs eventually were welcomed and favored by the French royal courts during the 16th century. They were also favorites of painters at the Spanish school and were included often in the artistic works that they produced. The Bichon Frise has a rather colorful past that included being used as a circus dog. However, today their primary function is as a companion or pet of families.
These small, sturdy little dogs have dark eyes that wear a rather inquisitive expression. In addition, they carry a plumed tail that curves over their backs. Bichon Frise dogs have a happy and cheerful personality as well as a naturally gentle nature, and are very playful. Because of their double, curled coat, these dogs are often called cotton balls. Their coats have a textured outer coat and undercoat of silkiness. They are white in color but might be also have shades of cream, apricot or buff on the body or surrounding the ears.
The Bichon Frise is a very active little dog and must have exercise regularly. Their hair grows constantly without shedding. For this reason, extensive brushing and grooming is required so that the dogs do not develop mats. This breed is also ideal for those that suffer from allergies.
