About the Akita
The Akita, a Japanese dog breed of large size, originates from the mountains of northern Japan. With a short double coat akin to other northern spitz breeds, Akitas were historically used by matagi for guarding and bear hunting. These powerful, loyal dogs are often aloof with strangers but deeply affectionate with their families. There are two distinct varieties: the pure Japanese strain, called Akita Inu or Akita-ken, and the larger mixed strain known as the “American Akita”. Learn more
