About the Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu, pronounced “SHEED-zoo,” is a beloved toy dog breed with a rich history. Originating more than 1,000 years ago, these little lions were likely ancestors of the modern Shih Tzu. Surprisingly, their name translates to “little lion” in Mandarin, and they were once known as “chrysanthemum-faced dogs” due to their unruly facial hair. Despite nearly disappearing during China’s Communist Revolution, a small group of dogs saved the breed, and today, Shih Tzus continue to charm celebrities and families alike. Learn more
