The American Staffordshire Terrier is believed to have originated as a result of crossing the older Bulldogs that were used to bait bulls before the beginning of the 19th century with a game terrier. Those Bulldogs had longer legs and more energy than the ones seen today. Before landing on the name of Staffordshire Bull Terrier in 1936; these dogs were called Half or Pit Dog and the Bull-and-Terrier Dog. This was done to mirror the American breed and separate them as different.
These dogs are perfect for a variety of dog sports like agility, obedience, conformation and tracking due to their courage and strength as well as their intelligence and athletic body. Often recognized by their sturdy bodies and powerful, strong heads, the short coats of the American Staffordshire Terriers can come in various colors of solid, patch or parti-colored.
These dogs are very people-oriented and they thrive when they are a part of a loving family and have a job to perform. They are friendly but also intensely loyal to their families. This means that they will do whatever is needed to defend their humans. You will not have to spend a lot of time maintaining the short coats of American Staffordshire Terriers, but they do need to be exercised regularly and trained. These dogs are perfect for families that enjoy affectionate and playful pets that want to become a part of a loving family. Check out these puppy ads here to see if you can find a match for you.
