The Belgian Malinois breed were created in Malines, Belgium and were, therefore, named for their city of origin. These dogs share the same lineage as the Belgian Tervuren and the Belgian Sheepdog. Actually, the Belgian dogs share breed criteria in every country except the U.S. Originally, the working character of the Malinois breed was highly prized and has been the preferred type of shepherd in the country of Belgium.
The Belgian Malinois has lots of energy and are very alert, making it quite sought after for police and military work. They are sometimes confused with the German Shepherd Dog, but they have a more elegant build and are smaller boned. They are quite strong and agile as well as great herders. In addition, they are superior in obedience, herding, tracking, conformation, sledding, and schutzhund. Their colors range from a deep fawn shade to mahogany with black tips. A black mask is on their face and ears.
Possessing an intense working desire, this highly intelligent and easily trained breed is always happiest when they are regularly active and have a job to perform. The Belgian Malinois is a medium size with a short coat, making them quite easy to care for. They are confident dogs and they adore their human families although they can be a bit reserved around strangers. Their owners can be assured of being protected by their Belgian Malinois without a worry of them becoming too aggressive. Could this possibly be your new canine family member?
