Bernese Mountain Dogs, or Berner Sennenhund, got their start in Switzerland where they got their name from the Canton of Bern. Initially, these dogs were put into service as farm dogs. With their sturdy and large bodies along with their confident and calm personalities, they were perfect to use for steering dairy cattle, pulling carts when it was time to go to market, guarding the farm, and simply being a companion to the farmer.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are one of the four Swiss Mountain Dog varieties and the only one that has a long, silky coat. This hardy breed thrives in cold climates and are intelligent, strong and agile. These are the qualities that helped him with drafting and droving duties in the mountains where he began. These days, they take part in obedience, agility, conformation, tracking, and herding. They are also used in therapy work. As the other Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Bernese are tri-colored with black, white and rust patches.
As these dogs have a heritage of farming, they need an adequate amount of exercise along with continuous obedience training. The Bernese Mountain dogs have double coats and are inclined to shed. Therefore, they must be brushed regularly. However, their easygoing and gentle nature make the maintenance more than worth it. They love to spend time with their human families and just want to be close to them. This makes them wonderful pets for families that adore affectionate dogs.
