The Labradoodle is the result of crossing a Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. Even though this dog is a hybrid, he might have similar traits of either one of his parents. However, it is not automatically a 50 and 50 split. The book, Into the Water Barrier, by Sir Donald Campbell published in 1955 is the first time "Labradoodle" was used. He used it to refer to his Labradoodle and Poodle crossbreed. It was not until 1988, though, that the Labradoodle was fully recognized. This occurred when breeder Wally Conron of Australia bred the Labrador Retriever with the Standard Poodle. His hope was to produce a guide dog to be used by the blind as well as a companion for people that have allergies to dander and fur.
In no time, Labradoodles were bred worldwide. It was not just due to their hypoallergenic traits. These dogs became highly popular because of their friendliness, intelligence and their attractive appearance. Modern day Labradoodles are used as guide dogs, assistance dogs, alert dogs as well as family pets. Their coats need to be shampooed and brushed on a regular basis along with being professionally trimmed at least twice yearly. Their eyes and ears must be examined often as well.
Typically, Labradoodles are friendly and pleasant tempered. In addition, they are quite intelligent and easy to train. These dogs make ideal pets for families and they particularly like children.
